• In spite of sluggish behavior in related tech markets, the permanent magnetic market is in the throes of a substantial upswing with the money saving factors of thrift and responsibility in regards to energy efficiency while witnessing a global increase in electrification. The growth stems primarily from automotive concerns as well as natural resource capture in the wind-powered industry.

Vehicles are becoming more efficient with energy usage, with engineered designs improving the efficiency of hybrid cars, electric automobiles, and power steering upgrades. The turbine market for wind harvesting falls closely behind in demand, with the manufacturing of the turbines seeing all-time highs for demand and better designs offer lower costs for construction and utilization.

    Looking to the Supply Source

Currently, China is the leading provider for permanent magnet supply, working with an estimated 23% of the world’s supply of rare earth metals. The dominated marketplace has placed China in a position to regulate pricing for demand as an afterthought, similar to currency manipulation on the open market. Availability or demand does not drive prices but is instead disregarded for control issues. With a monopoly on the metals required for permanent magnets resting solely in China’s hand, prices can continue to fluctuate on Chinese interests and not worldwide demand.

Minerals coming under Chinese control include ferrite as well as the rare earth metals commonly heard mentioned in the news with conjunction to cell phone technology. These include dysprosium, of which China controls 99% of the market and neodymium of which they control 95%. Strategic steps are being taken by the Chinese government to keep control of the market, but evolving technologies may prove to be the lynchpin in bringing the giant down.

Light at the End of the Tunnel

Recent discoveries in heat fluctuating metal sources of nickel and vanadium have found that subtle heat changes allow a wide range of magnetic shift as those required by the forcible manipulation of rare earth magnets.  This technology is still in the developmental stage, though laboratory tests show great promise in this inexpensive substitution for a market resource controlled by China. Oddly enough, it is the consumer boom in China itself that is helping fuel the influx of need, so at least for the time being, prices aren’t so out of control as to knock out non-Chinese manufacturing competition.

  • The popularity of neodymium magnets is increasing day by day. Many people and industries find it as a great element available for their projects. Unfortunately, the increased usage of neodymium has created a wide range of health issues. Even though most of these issues take place as a result of negligence, it is important to pay attention to this and keep people away from these harmful effects as much as possible.

Neodymium is about 20 times stronger than the traditional magnets out there. This fact has increased the number of pediatric ingestion-related injuries. It has even been proven from an abstract released from The American Academy of Pediatrics at the National Conference and Exhibition that took place in Orlando. According to their abstract, this health issue is common not just within the United States. Many other countries that use neodymium in large scale including China, Australia, and the United Kingdom have experienced it.

Neodymium Magnets in Pediatric Ingestion-related Injuries

Neodymium became a common element in the manufacturing process of jewelry, toys and other novelty items in the early 2000s. During the late 2000s, it became an important aspect of the novelty toys, which were aimed at adults. Along with the increasing number of incidents in pediatric ingestion-related injuries, the US Consumer production safety commission banned the sale of all the products that included this powerful magnet. The seriousness was highlighted in 2012 with the numerous cases that were related to pediatric bowel perforation and the death of one child who had accidentally swallowed it.

At the moment, you won’t be able to find kids’ toys that contain neodymium within the United States. However, it has not put a stop to the above-mentioned problems because some countries still use this magnet in toys. You can easily find adult desktop toys on the Internet for sale. As per the latest news, it has been identified that Canada is taking necessary actions to ban such toys and save Canadians from neodymium.

In summary, neodymium is a powerful magnet available and they are invaluable in most of the industries like in wind power generation. Therefore, the industries that use these elements should use them in an appropriate manner and the people who use them should also take care when purchasing items containing neodymium magnets.

  • Magnets have become an essential ingredient in the present world, especially behind the manufacturing process of modern world equipment. Magnets come in different shapes, sizes and strength levels. This can be quite confusing when making a decision about the strength of the magnet needed for your project. Out of the available magnets in the present world, neodymium has gained much attention due to its unique and interesting properties.

Neodymium is basically a rare earth metal that can be used as a powerful magnet. They are recognized as the strongest in relation to their mass. Even the smallest neodymium magnets have the ability to support thousand times of their own mass. Even though it is a strong magnet, the price of neodymium is perfectly affordable. These reasons have increased the popularity of this magnet and it is being used for a wide range of applications in the modern world.

What Are Neodymium Magnets Found in

China is the world’s largest neodymium exporter at the moment. They cater around 80% of the world’s requirements. Their demand has experienced significant growth after their discovery in 1970s. They are also known as NIB magnets and take in between N24 to N55 in the magnetism scale, which has the maximum of 64. The magnetic strength is adjusted by the manufacturers according to their requirements.

The neodymium magnets are susceptible to differences in temperature and they can even lose their temperature under high temperature. However, you can also find some specialized neodymium magnets in the present world that can perform under extremely high environmental temperatures. The weight of these rare earth magnets is relatively low when compared to other magnets, which has impressed the industries that use this magnet.

Since neodymium cup magnets are strong, their uses are extremely versatile. You can find neodymium being used for both industrial and commercial needs. The usage of these magnets in wind farms can be considered as a perfect example to prove this fact. Wind turbines require strong, efficient, affordable and low weight motors and neodymium is the best element available out there to make such motors. Since the number of wind farms in the world is increasing at a rapid rate, the demand for neodymium increases from every corner of the world.

Neodymium N52 is also heavily used to manufacture motors in hybrid vehicles. In addition, you can also find them in many experimental levitation devices, mounting tools, geocaching, oil filters and in clamps. This list consists of many other small scale uses and it is expected to rise along with time.

  • As the search for improved quality products continues, Neodymium magnets are taking center stage.   Considered as a remarkable modern invention, that has several benefits and uses. Whether we know it or not, we are using these magnets in one form or another, and if you start looking around, it will not be difficult to find many devices using these magnets. Whether it is a headphone, computer hard disk or loudspeaker, these magnets are an essential part of it.

Neodymium Magnets: An Important Part of Human Life

Neodymium magnets are an alloy of neodymium, boron, and iron.  The chemical formula for this tetragonal crystalline structure is Nd2Fe14B.  Irrespective of their size, neodymium magnets have enormous power. They have therefore bridged the gap, where ferrite and iron magnets have failed.

The origin of the word neodymium is from two Greek words “neo” and “didymos”. “Neo” means new while “didymos” means twin. The credit of its discovery goes to the Austrian inventor Baron Carl Auer Von Welsbach.  However, it wasn’t until 1925 that scientists were able to isolate it in comparatively pure form.  Neodymium magnets are the strongest, commercially available magnets.  And also have extraordinary higher levels of resistance against any process of demagnetization.

Monetarily speaking neodymium magnets have become a popular choice because of their comparatively lower cost. China accounts for a major share of total world production. Two different production processes are used for manufacturing these magnets. The first one is a sintered process that is used to produce about 90% of total production while the remaining part is manufactured using a bonded magnet process. Sintered magnets have comparatively higher magnetic strength than bonded magnets.

Another significant feature of small neodymium magnets is the higher Curie temperature. Curie temperature refers to a temperature where the magnetic power of a magnet is lost. Normally it ranges between 310 - 400゜C for both types of magnets. However, it is possible to increase it up to 800゜C by adding dysprosium and terbium.

There is no doubt about the fact that big neodymium magnets are one of the most useful inventions in the modern world. However, there are a few drawbacks that we should keep in mind while using them.  Their Corrosive nature is one of the key disadvantages associated with these magnets. That is why one should exercise absolute caution while handling these magnets. Carelessness can result in snapping your fingers.  Extra attention should be paid when working in high-temperature conditions because these magnets have a tendency to catch fire.  For optimal results, a low temperature should be maintained.

  • The Chinese currently supply around 95% of the world's rare-earth metals.  However if the United States - and the Pentagon in particular - can set up their own supply chain, then they would be able to provide both the military and many companies in the industrial sector with all the rare earth metals that they need. This is good news for many of the blue-chip companies’ including Apple, GM, and Vestas.

    1. East versus West

The government will have a close eye on the sector as they are dependent on China to fairly distribute rare earth products. Any dispute between the countries could leave the USA with a rare earth oxides deficit. Even if the products are still supplied, the cost could suddenly increase and at this time of tightening belts, this would be far from welcome. Prices have already risen in recent years, as China is said to be cutting back their export, partly as a result of the ongoing disputes with Japan. 2014 is believed to be the year that exports will really shrink and this will have an impact on the ability to develop military aircraft including stealth bombers. Although stealth bombers are not going to be the main item needing rare earth magnets, they are an essential part for them.

Alaska Takes the Reins in Rare Earth Metal Production

    2. Looking for Other Sources

In an effort to minimize the problems of the Chinese withholding, Watch Ucore Rare Metals, an Alaskan company has been working on heavy rare earth deposits.  Thanks to a large financial investment, there is a great deal of confidence that there is going to be a growth in demand for their products.  This has been boosted by the fact that there is less time needed to get the items into production.  In addition, the Alaskan State Legislature is fully behind the company.

If rare earth magnets such as alnico magnets become too expensive there are some alternatives, but they are not suitable for certain military organizations, wind turbines or power generators.  Primarily because ferrite magnets are not as strong as rare earth magnets; therefore there is a compromise in terms of safety and efficiency when other neo magnets are used.

Despite the previously mentioned dispute with China, there does not seem to have been a noticeable price rise and it has been estimated that it is possible to buy the materials for rare earth magnets at a price not seen for a number of years. It is still important not to be totally dependent on another country as the supply could be cut off at any time. Stockpiling may not be the best solution at the moment but it is one that should not be discounted.
